UK government rethinks position on social media

Yesterday, the UK government has backed down on its position regarding social media and networks in times of civil unrest. In a meeting organised by the UK government, ministers, police, social network Facebook, telecoms provider Research in Motion ([RIM] the makers of Blackberry), and microblogging service Twitter resulted in unclear direction from the Home Office.

This week may shed more light on how the government, and in turn the police, will manage social media in times of unrest. On Thursday, social network Facebook, microblogging service Twitter and Research in Motion (RIM)'s Blackberry are to meet the UK Home Office to discuss the riots in England.
