London Ambassador at the 2012 Olympics
This morning the email I’ve been waiting for for what seems like a year finally landed in my inbox, “Congratulations – We’d like to offer you a London Ambassador role.”
I’m really, really excited.
I remember 11 years ago, when I was still living in Australia (before thoughts of moving to the UK had even entered my mind) how the biggest buzz about the Sydney Olympics was around the volunteers – and how they made the games. At the time, quite naively I thought those roles were mostly for retired people and it didn’t occur to me that I could have taken part. Now I’ll get to be a part of it in the city I’ve called home for the last seven years, and I couldn’t be more excited.
I’ve always loved the Olympics, and I’ve always been passionate about volunteer work. In fact, there’s not really been any gap from when I left school 15 years ago to now where I haven’t done some kind of volunteer work. Being able to combine the two is AWESOME!
I have been offered an exciting role as part of the “Flying Squad” which I am stoked about. I thought I would be based anywhere in the city and just offering help and assistance to visitors to London, but from what I can see from the email I received my role will be even more exciting than that (for me).
According to the email, I will be able to interview visitors and volunteers to create content for the comms and PR team and the London Ambassador website. I'll be creating content (photos and video) to be seeded on the London Ambassador and Olympic digital media channels, such as Facebook, YouTube and Flickr - which then has the potential to seed into mainstream media and get seen by millions of people around the world. I'm really excited about putting my PR and social media expertise to good use for the Olympics and be part of creating the picture of what it's like to be a London Ambassador.
My first day is the 27th of July – which is the opening day. Now… I just hope the uniform isn’t a parachute jumpsuit!
