The X Factor: Social media and the live shows infographic – Week 6

Rachel Hawkes, account director, Elemental By Rachel Hawkes

The eighth season of Days of Our Lives The X Factor has certainly not been without its drama.  The sixth live show was no different with the re-entry of Week 1 exit of 17 year-old Amelia Lily following the shock exit of controversial contestant Frankie.

Mid-week prior to the show, the programme makers opened the phone lines for viewers to vote in their favourite contestant from the four that exited at the first hurdle:  Amelia Lily, Jonjo, James Michael and 2 Shoes.  Amelia Lily (who has maintained a healthy social profile from the beginning) was the unsurprising winner, with almost 50% of the votes.

Creating quite the media storm certainly helped The X Factor’s social profiles, with the programmes YouTube channel seeing an extra one million upload views and a 350 increase in subscribers this week compared to Week 5.  The interesting figures for The X Factor come when you look at its Facebook engagement and Twitter followers.  During Week 5, Facebook engagement dropped by 126 people over the weekend, yet during this weekend, there was almost 5,000 more people interacting with the page.  With Twitter, @thexfactor grew by almost 19,000 followers during Saturday and Sunday’s shows, an increase of 10,000 when compared to Week 5.

These are relatively significant spikes, which can be attributed to the renewed interest in the show following the shock departure of Frankie (mentored by Gary Barlow) and the extra offline and online advertising to promote the re-entry for a contestant that was booted off the show in Week 1.  I’m sure we would see this reflected in ITV’s viewing figures also.

The contestants themselves also benefited from renewed interest.  This week, each contestant had more fans interacting with their Facebook pages than they did prior to Saturday’s show, YouTube views were, on average, higher this week than last.  Additionally, during Week 5 each contestant averaged an increase in fans and followers of 10,863 whilst this week the average increase during the live shows was 13,981.

It will be interesting to see whether Kitty, who was booted off the show this week, will benefit from the “GaGa” factor, with the international popstar (and Kitty’s idol) rushing onto the stage to commiserate with her following her exit.

On this week’s post over on The Wall, we looked at whether the public are losing interest in Janet Devlin – who was an early favourite to win – and whether the bullying allegations against Misha B are responsible for her social media channels hitting the breaks.  Next to Kitty, Misha B’s Facebook and Twitter grew the least during Week 6’s live shows, who she also faced in the bottom two (and was saved by the judges).  Is she the next to go?
