The X Factor social media live show finale analysis

Rachel Hawkes, account director, Elemental By Rachel Hawkes

Our infographic below demonstrates how social media predicted the winner, girl band Little Mix, making X Factor history becoming the first group to win. How did the last weekend pan out for the finalists and what impact did this have?

Saturday

In a X Factor first, Wembley was the venue for the final three contestants Marcus Collins, Amelia Lily and Little Mix performing in front of 10,000 super fans for the all important record deal and shot at the Christmas number one.

It proved the be the busiest time performance-wise by contestants cracking out more songs across the weekend than they had before. The rub was one act had to go at Wembley live on the show, leaving the last two to fight it out on Sunday.

On Saturday, first up, a performance by all contestants who made their own song choice: Marcus Collins (Outcasts' Hey Yeah), Amelia Lily (Christina Aguilera's Ain't No Other Man), Little Mix (The Source featuring Candi Stanton [made popular again by Florence and the Machine], You Got the Love).

This was followed by a duet with their mentors Gary Barlow (The Boys: Marcus Collins who sang Billy Joel's classic, Always a Woman), Tulisa Contostavlos (The Groups: Little Mix who sand a medley of Alicia Keys' If I Ain't Got You and Empire State of Mind) and Kelly Rowland (The Girls: Amelia Lily who sang, Ike and Tina Turner's River Deep, Mountain High).

At the end of Saturday's show, one contestant had to go. It wasn't to be for Amelia Lily who received the fewest votes, conceding defeat gracefully vowing that it wasn't the end of her.

Michael Bublé, JLS, One Direction and Leona Lewis were the special guest acts.

Sunday

On Sunday, finalists Marcus Collins and Little Mix preformed their songs of the series, Marcus Collins (Jackie Wilson's, Lifting Me Higher), Little Mix (En Vogue's, Don't Let Go). Bringing festive spirit to the competition the contestants sang Christmas classics; Marcus, Wham's Last Christmas and Little Mix Silent Night respectively, their last songs before public voting closed.

The finale and to round off the end of series 8, each contestant sang their version of what would be the was the winner's Christmas single, Damian Rice's Cannonball. The final votes were in, social media correctly predicted The X Factor 2011 winner, Little Mix.

Newly crowned X Factor's Little Mix won't have time to rest as the battle for the Christmas number one started as soon as their victory was announced, how much will the social currency they've been building help them take the top of the charts.

West Life, Cold Play and the all of the X Factor finalists in a joint performance were the special guests (not to forget special appearances by Goldie Chung, as it appeared the call of Wembley was to too strong her to ignore).
