Yahoo! calls time on social bookmarking site Delicious

Tim Gibbon, director Elemental By Tim Gibbon

In an email yesterday, Delicious and Yahoo! called time on the social bookmarking site. Users have the choice to either let their Delicious bookmarks fade into existence, or move them across to new California-based owner AVOS, by 23 September 2011.AVOS Delicious and Yahoo! logo

AVOS acquired Delicious from Yahoo! on 27 April 2011, and has been working to restore the service to its former glory.  AVOS, a company founded by Chad Hurley and Steve Chen who created the infamous YouTube isn't the only acquisition under its belt thus far. It also acquired real-time business intelligence platform Tap11 in May 2011.

Most well-known for being founders of YouTube, which they created in 2005, it was acquired by Google 18 months later for $1.76 billion USD.

From the AVOS site it states Hurley and Chen were early employees at PayPal, the online payment service, which is now part of eBay, so are obviously no strangers to technology and building services.

The Delicious and Yahoo! email is below, with the announcement and instructions to switch your bookmarks and information also available from AVOS. It's certainly a company to watch given its history (do you recall the days of this annoying URL http://del.icio.us?), founders and the cash in the bank it potentially has. In case you're wondering, we're at http://www.delicious.com/elementalcommunications, where are you?

Bookmark that date - 23 September 2011.
