The User-Lab is a not-for-profit research centre based at the UCE Birmingham Institute of Art and Design http://www.uce.ac.uk. The centre was developed with Higher Education Funding Council for England http://www.hefce.ac.uk and lab carries out commercial and academic research projects in user-centred design. Since its inception in 2000, User-Lab has carried out numerous projects with clients including The BBC, Birmingham City Council, The Environment Agency; The Healthcare Commission, and the Learning and Teaching Support Network.

Projects are most often focussed on assuring usability, accessibility and user acceptance. Application areas include websites, CD ROMs, e-learning and software and hardware interfaces. User-Lab's academic research programme bridges two research areas consisting of museums, learning and interpretation and secondly design research. Research outcomes include over seventy publications in subject areas ranging from e-learning to user-interface design. User-Lab is staffed by four full-time members of staff comprising of Director, Senior Research Fellow, Design Manager and Programmer.
